A secretary steals $40,000 from her employer and leaves town intending to start a new life in California. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm she pulls into The Bates Motel, managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his elderly mother.
Hitchcock used Bosco chocolate syrup to simulate blood for the shower scene.

He leaves with his loot but returns a while later with a plump prostitute and three teenage hoodlums, who proceed to terrorize the lady as they wreck her home.
